My school's drama club needs to find a musical?
We have a very small high school drama club and we're trying to find a good musical or play to do this year. We have about 20 girls and about 5 boys. We need something that would be easy, and would make people want to go see it. The previous musicals we've done are: High School Musical, and we've also done two varitey shows that included numbers from all kinds of musicals. Does anybody have some suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

First: Nikki's answer won't help you, because of the ones she listed (Chicago, Wicked, Hairspray, Mama Mia, Phantom of the Opera, Working, Les Miserables, Moulin Rouge, West Side Story....), you could probably only get the rights to perform Working or West Side Story, since the rest of them are currently being performed on Broadway (and Moulin Rouge isn't a stage production).
Once Upon a Mattress is great and has quite a few female parts. How to Succeed... is wonderful but you need a very strong male lead and with only 5 guys, you might have trouble. Something like Annie, that requires a large female chorus, would be good, but that one might be a little weird since you'd have high schoolers playing both kids and adults...but as long as you have enough short girls, you'd be fine The Pajama Game is a fun one. I'm not sure if you're looking to CAST everyone in the drama club, but some musicals that have small casts include: A New Brain, which is great, Bat Boy the Musical, Das Barbecu, The Taffetas (good for girls!!).
Since you have so many girls, it is hard to find a play that has mostly girls and a few boys. Like one of the others suggested, Annie would be a good one to do with so many girls and it wouldn't be so weird even if you have short or tall girls. Theater is an art, and can be used in many different ways. Just look at Cinderella with Brandy. There was an African American mother, Caucasian father and Asian son... that couldn't happen in real life unless the son was adopted. Anyway... you could do a "tribute" show and do songs from Weber, Sondheim, Fosse, or another great playwright. You could also do Cinderella as I mentioned before. Hope this advice helps. Good Luck!
I'm just going to throw out musicals - Chicago, Wicked, Hairspray, Mama Mia, Phantom of the Opera, Working, Les Miserables, Moulin Rouge, West Side Story....
Gypsy - Mama Rose is a wildly determined stage mother trying to make her two young daughters into famous vaudeville performers. At first, she focuses on the younger, cuter June. But when June runs off to marry her beau, Tulsa, Rose concentrates on her other daughter, Louise. Louise, filled with hidden talent, becomes a star.

I like Tourandot because the Princess asks a riddle from each of her suitors and they fail to answer it and she cuts off their Heads. People would love that!!
