Uh Oh! www.fafsa.com.........?
I provided information to www.fafsa.com thinking this was the application for FAFSA. I didn't give them any money, but I did give them my social, driver's license number, name, address, etc. CRAP! I don't know why I didn't realize it wasn't the right place. So far all I've gotten from them is some emails saying I needed to complete it. I can't completely delete the application, but I got rid of all my personal info. Is my identity going to be stolen? I really should have looked into it more before I clicked on the link. Please give me some more info!

FAFSA.com is not in the business of stealing identities. It is true that this is not the real FAFSA and it can be filled out for free at the government website. However, they bill themselves similar to tax preparers in that they claim to assist students in the process. But, unlike taxes, the FAFSA is very easy to fill out. There are no loopholes, or laws and the average person does not need assistance filling it out. So, it's true that they don't make it easy for students to know that the FAFSA is free to fill out on the government website so many people consider it a scam. And while they might be a scam they are a legitimate business that does not steal or sell identities and they will file your FAFSA for you if you paid the money. Your information is just as safe on their website as it is on any other website.
maybe, maybe not. fafsa.com claims to be a professional filing help that helps people fill out the fafsa. They call themselves a FAFSA preparer (similar to a tax preparer that helps people file their taxes) There is supposed to be a consulting company behind that website.
technically, the right place is fafsa.ed.gov and that is where the application is. You guys should be alert about your finances and any unauthorized account openings. Ask the bank and such if there is anything else you can do to protect your identity.
