random geographical/astronomy qstn?
This may seem a bit odd but i have always had the dream of being somewhere in the u.s. where i can see the milky way galaxy from the ground with my own eyes n no telescope. But this obviously needs to b deep deep country with no city anywhere near it...but does anyone know some of these areas? (the closer to ohio the better =P )
thanks!

Well, ..., there are still many places in the US that you can go to see the Milky way with Naked eye. Generally, any place you go where you can get away for city lighting will provide a view of the Milk Way. If you use the clear sky clock light pollution meter (See the link below). You'll find that any area in the yellow - black zones will yield views of the Milky Way in varying degrees of OK (yellow) - Great! (Black). Just select an area from the Web page that is closest to where you live and drill down to the detailed information.
For instance The Jordan Lake area of North Carolina (Yellow) still provides views of the Milky Way. Even though the towns of Durham, Apex, Cary, and Sanford have greatly diminished the detail over the years, it remains one of the most locally accessible areas near an urban sprawl boasting a view of our Galaxy.
The Outer-Banks of North Carolina (Black), Eastern Piedmont (Grey - Black), Sandhills (Green - Blue), and Mountainous (Blue - Black) areas of North Carolina also offer highly detailed views as well.
Again, no matter where you live, you just need to get out of town and away from city lights to star enjoying the night.
As far as a telescope goes, it will not help you see the Milky Way. The Milky Way stretches an entire 180 Degrees across the heavens. Literally from horizon to horizon. No telescope can contain all of that. You just have to get out where you can lay on your back and take it all in.
