Why is Africa so poor?

If so much money is donated to Africa every year why is it still the poorest continent on earth? It has more help than any other place and yet still hundreds of thousands of people starve every year.

  • That is a very complex question, you need to be aware of Africa's colonial history, as well as the factors that drove the industrial revolution in the west.

IM assuming when you say POOR your are speaking in terms of American Perception of wealth. Africa has over 50% of the worlds natural resources and one country with one of the largest supply Of oil in the world, HOWEVER we control only 3% of that wealth. The richest countries in terms of mineral wealth (Diamonds/Oil/Gold) are always at WAR in Africa, you've probably watched all the movies.

If you look at the industrial revolution in Britain in the 1800's it was driven by 'necessity', here in Africa in the 1800's you could live off the land literally so we didn't have the Spirit to conquer or develop foreign lands instead we were conqoured...... we have been give a lifestyle to adopt 'Development' and 'ideals' that are foreign to us, America and Britain evolved over hundreds of years .... we are expected to catchup in 50? We can never beat you at your own game and will always be losers.

The AID .... it feeds you for one day, two days, and basically creates Dependency, I wish all those well meaning Charities, Doctors, Volunteers, empathetic world leaders would just leave us alone, we need to learn our own lessons , and pick ourselves up!

  • I'm liberian, 19 years old. I've been to a few african countries and theres nice and bad parts. In america they tend to potray africa as "starved big bellies and flies on their heads nonsense". Africa is a very big continent and you would be suprised if you went.

  • Only some parts of Africa have poor areas or,

    maybe a majority i don't know.

In other areas there are resorts and mansions and beautiful beaches.

I would say most African places are poor but other areas of Africa are indeed rich

  • There are a number of factors. Corrupt and/or incompetent leaders. Some of the people aren't interested in helping themselves either for example quelling the AIDS epidemic would be going better if the people actually would implement ideas like using a condom.

  • We often discuss that in the wine bar.

Actually there are rich people in Africa who live in gated communities but that is never shown on tv.

The donated aid never reaches the poor.

  • Easy, we never send enough money to Africa, and our donations are temporary fixes to bigger problems. Societies don't grow on charity.

  • lol a small percentage of the money you donate actually goes to help out africa. and not all of africa is poor you know look at johannesburg in south africa. it looks like new york

  • As a person who was been to Africa, let me tell you; they only show you the impoverished areas.

  • Europeans.

  • though much money, the poor people is much more. The climate there is not good enough for them to grow food.
