How do you know your a furry?

So I have this friend and she loves animals and often roll-plays as a wolf. But when I looked up what a furry is it says they dress up as animals.

Now as a kid she used to dress up as a cat for halloween, but no longer does that. And as for sexual furries, she in no way would ever have sex in an animal costume let alone dress up as one now that she is older. (21)

People keep calling her a furry and her answer is always "just bc I roll play as a wolf and love animals doesn't make me a furry"

She also loves anime characters dressed up as animals (non-sexual)

So is she a Furry or not? O.o

  • The answer you found when you looked it up is misleading. A furry is someone who's part of the furry fandom, the global community of fans who love and appreciate anthropomorphic cartoon animal characters and the creative, talented artists behind them. It's more than just liking cartoons that have animal characters in them, but is about appreciating the presence of those characters in all genres of art including cartoons, advertising, music, stage performance, puppetry, sculpture, etc.

While the animal costumes (called fursuits) are a prominent part of the furry fandom and pretty much everyone loves to see them, having and wearing one is by no means a requirement to consider oneself a furry. Based on furry convention statistics about 20% of furries have at least one fursuit. The rest either have no desire to get one, can't afford one, or just haven't gotten one yet. My friend and I have been in the furry fandom for 9 years and neither of us have a fursuit (although I am saving my money for one). And any idea about people wearing such costumes to have sex in is nothing more than a myth perpetuated by ignorant/prejudiced people and the shock-ratings-driven media. In all practicality it just doesn't happen.

Dressing up as a cat for Halloween doesn't make someone a furry. It's not mutually exclusive, but not a positive indicator. Loving animals doesn't make someone a furry because there are lots of animal lovers who aren't furries. And role-playing as a wolf doesn't automatically make someone a furry either.

The label "furry" is just that, a label for the purpose of description. Even if your friend is totally a fan of cartoon animal characters and she feels great enjoyment in the culture of the furry community, it's totally her choice whether or not to wear that label. There are people who have been a part of the furry fandom for many years, and some who are even on staff at furry conventions, who don't consider themselves to be a furry.

Other people calling your friend a furry is meaningless. It doesn't matter what they think she is. If she feels she's a furry then great, she's a furry. If she doesn't consider herself to be a furry then she's not a furry. There's no reason to reject the idea of being a furry, but if she's just not that much into anthro animal characters beyond some role playing and enjoying anime characters dressed up as animals, there's not much of an indication to say she is a furry either.
