How do I convert foods into servings?

What I mean isn't a serving of the whole food, but of vegetable, fruit, or what-have-you. For instance: I need so many servings of fruits, grains, meats, etc. I know my can of minestrone soup is 2 servings/can. But how many categories does that cover? It has veggies, and beans (are those considered meats, or subtitutes thereof), so how many servings of what am I eating?

Minestrone soup might be a bad example. But i don't typically sit down and measure foods before i eat them, and I am usually eating prepared foods, not "1 slice of bread the size of a cassette tape".

Does anyone have any pointers or resources that may help me to understand how to apply the servings business to my life?

  • Go to your local bookstores to the Food/Nutrition section. There are plenty of books on serving and calory count.
