How do I unlock characters in Marvel vs Capcom 2 Arcade?

I have the Naomi version of the Marvel vs Capcom 2 Arcade cabinet at my home and there are many characters to unlock. Your machine must gather experience points to unlock the extra characters. Ever time I put in a credit the experience goes up a little bit. We are at 268 right now and it still says we are lv 1. My question: Is there any way to get more experience points besides just adding credits to the machine?

    The Japanese version allows you to gain access to hidden characters (such as Jill Valentine from the Biohazard/Resident Evil series) by exchanging data with the Dreamcast's VMU unit. This feature is going to be removed in the US version.
