Car title problem?
I moved to VA from WI a few months ago. I brought my car with me. I tried to title the vehicle in VA so I don't have any problems. I am still making loan payments on this car. I have gone to the DMV 3 times in the last month just to get this sorted out. I got my car registered in VA but when it came to the title everything seemed fine at the DMV but they sent me a letter 3 weeks later telling me that the VA DMV issued me the title "Inadvertently". That they have a put a "STOP" on the vehicle record to prevent any further transactions. I never got a title in the mail from the WI DMV as far as I can remember. I was under the impression that the Credit Union from where I have the loan had it. But they told me a month ago that the owner(me) has the title not them. Now VA dmv is asking for the title from WI that I don't have and I don't wanna go back to WI to get the title. How can I get this resolved? It's a pain to have a car in VA. Can't use it without paying a fortune or wasting time.

The VA DMV notified you that the title was issued in your name, without a legal owner, in error. To stop the transaction, they put a "hold" or "stop" on the record, to prevent you or other's from titling the car in your name only, without a lienholder. Since you have been notified of the problem, you simply contact the VA DMV, request the lienholder be placed back on the title, request the lienholder have the "new" title issued with their lien, mailed to the DMV in the state where you reside. It will probably take a couple months to get the paperwork in order, and correct the record, your registration/licensing/insurance fees will follow, and then you'll be able to legally drive the car. If you never received the title, the record should show the address the title was sent to, likely your former address, and it will also state that it was either received or returned to the DMV, as titles are not forwarded to a new address, they are sent to the last known address on record for the registered/legal owner.
