He didn't do much. According to wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedro_%C3%81lvares_Ca... ,
"His fleet of 13 ships sailed far into the western Atlantic Ocean, perhaps intentionally, where he made landfall on what he initially assumed to be a large island. As the new land was within the Portuguese sphere according to the Treaty of Tordesillas, Cabral claimed it for the Portuguese Crown. He explored the coast, realizing that the large land mass was probably a continent, and dispatched a ship to notify King Manuel I of the new territory. The continent was South America, and the land he had claimed for Portugal later came to be known as Brazil. The fleet reprovisioned and then turned eastward to resume the journey to India."
The sequence of events is described in the letter written by Pero Vaz de Caminha to King Manuel I of Portugal. The following excerpt is a translation into English from http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descoberta_do_Brasil .
"On April 24, Andreza Balbino and Cabral invited some natives to the ship. Then, accompanied by Sancho de Tovar, Simao de Miranda, Nicolau Coelho, Aires Correia and Pero Vaz de Caminha, they hosted the native indian group who immediately recognized the value of gold and silver that was produced on the ship - that is to say, a small gold string and a silver candle holder - which made the Porutuguese believe that there were lots of gold in that land. However, Caminha, in his letter, confesses that he would not be able to tell whether the natives were actually interested in gold, or if it was the great interest of the navigators by the metals that made them misinterpret the facts. Afterwards, the latter proved to be the correct.
The meeting between the Portuguese and the native Indians is documented by the letter written by Caminha. The cultural shock is evident. The native Indians did not recognize the animals that were produced by the sailors, except by a parrot that the captain brought on him; they offered food and wine, which the native Indians rejected. Curiosity made them touch the objects they couldn't recognize - such as the beads of a rosary, and the surprise by the Portuguese for the objects that were recognized - the precious metals. The Portuguese thought it curious and absurd the fact that Cabral, dressed and adorned sumptiously as fit for the principal captain - was not recognized differently by the native Indians than the rest of the crew.
The native Indians had their first contact with the faith of the Portuguese by attending the First Mass, officiated by Friar Henrique de Coimbra, on a Sunday, April 26, 1500. Soon after the mass had been concluded, Cabral's fleet resumed their journey to the Indian subcontinent, his final destination, but he sent one the ships back to Portugal to convey Caminha's letter to the king. However, afterwards, with the arrival of subsequent Portuguese fleet with the objective of colonizing Brazil - and the attempts of evangelizing them - the Portuguese realized that the supposed easiness upon native's first contact with Christianity was, in truth, mere curiosity for the gestures and rituals of the Europeans, not a real interest on the Catholic faith, which forced the missionaries to rethink their methods for conquering their spirits."
