Girl, I just got my first pap smear done about 3 weeks ago and just like you I was so terrified to get it done. I'm pregnant so I HAD to get it done, I even tried to get out of it but I couldn't and I had anxiety the entire week about it. I thought it'd hurt and that it'd be some terrible emotionally scarring experience.
But it's actually SO easy. I asked my doctor beforehand what it'd feel like and he said that the speculum would probably feel just like a tampon. It really does. If you've ever used/use tampons then the speculum will be a breeze, and it's really not that uncomfortable when he opens it.
You hardly feel the swab, either. Personally I had no pinch, no weird feeling, nothing. The whole process goes by SO quick, it should only take about a minute or two and then you're done. Pap smears are supposed to be even more uncomfortable when you are pregnant so take it from me, it's not bad at all!
You'll be glad that you got it done because pap smears really are so important for a woman to get. Don't worry too much. Good luck(:
It really isn't that bad. It's uncomfortable but not necessarily painful. In my opinion, the speculum is more uncomfortable than the actually swabbing of the inside of the cervix.
The speculum (in case you don't know it is an instrument made of metal or plastic that is used to "open" the vagina so that the physician can have better access to your cervix) is pretty uncomfortable because it makes you feel stretched out...it's hard to describe. When they actually swab your cervix (the swab basically looks like a long q-tip) it pinches a bit but doesn't really hurt.
It's a pretty quick process, so keep that in mind.
