  • I give him credit. His last two CDs have him going the blues route and getting better critical acclaim for it. I'm at the Crossroads Fest tomorrow so I'll see him.

Did not care for his Dave Matthews lite early stuff.

Edit: Saw his Crossroads set. He is still more of a pop star. But time will tell.

  • His influences like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix as well as Buddy Guy are definitely alot more blues and blues influenced than Mayer will ever be.

What turned me away from Mayer was in a guitar magazine as he called himself the "Savior of the Blues" in so many words. In my opinion, the blues doesn't need saved. Just take a look at the hundreds of thousands who make it out to the various festivals this year.

Mayer is a great pop songwriter, especially for the female 20-30 crowd and always will be and for the guitar heads who are all about getting girls, but there are way better guitar players and blues players out there, IMHO.

  • John Mayer's a mix of smart pop and blues based music. Sometimes it takes an artist time to find their footing, and I expect him to lean more towards bluesy arrangements, rather than pure pop.

His lyrics are good, but he really shines on his more soulful songs.

"Gravity" is a good example of his maturation.

No doubt he's a very good guitar player, especially when it comes to his rhythm playing......"Wait Until Tomorrow", "Who Do You Think I Was", "Bold As Love", and "I've Got A Woman" are great examples of excellent R&B rhythm guitar.

His vocals have matured and become more soulful since the live album.....this is a guy to watch in the future, because he "gets it". Hopefully he'll go further in that direction.

No need for any duets with Buddy Guy, or other bluesmen to legitimize him. Let him stand on his own merit.

Mayer and Derek Trucks will lead the way, in the future as guitarists who break boundries and smash genres. Guitarists like them are necessary to keep the music from becoming stagnant.

  • Pop.

Great strong blues influence. It is this sort of wonderful blend that brings the blues to a wider audience. Through Mayer some will go on to discover the greats.

  • He started out pop / rock / folk. Then he discovered people like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Buddy Guy. Hes definitely got a blues side. Hes great at blues. I have his live blues CD and love it. I just played it yesterday, as a matter of fact.

  • He was surely influenced by the blues. He's a pop artist, but has some deep blues roots for a young kid. Larry Carlton was one of my favorite guitarists.. He started playing country and it still shows with his bending techniques.

  • His music that gets played on the radio is much poppier then some of his other stuff. At Bonaroo 2005, he played with Herbie Hancock, amazing set, jazzy, bluesy jam.

  • Blues all the way.... Pop is Justin Timberlake and Hillary Duff a.k.athe type pf music I don't like lol. I love John Mayer!

    and he's sexy.

  • I think he might have a blues contemporary influence on his music.

  • he may influence pop artists but the man has a soul so he's BLUES baby! now go wash your mouth out with a wire brush for blaspheming the man!:-)
