It is not a robotic process but a developmental and quite human process to grow into the career. No matter what type of professor one wants to be, the steps are the same. In the Arts, the Sciences, Teaching, Heath Care, or whatever, there are three number of steps.
Step 1. Earn a Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) in some area where one would like to be, The major area is the one that identifies ones specially sekected area. The minor area supplements the major for ones growth. If one can, choose a major area is that the best personal choice. Then the minor area in the history of the major. An example, the major is in Teaching, the minor would be in History of Education or other courses related to the major. Choose a university over a college .It will have more choices for areas of study. Do the best one can in classes. Aim for a GPA of 3.6 on a 4-point scale. One may wish to or have to work in the labor market as well at this first step to gain life experience. That is recommended to be period of 3 years or longer. It maybe a prerequisite to any university even including the Ivy League universities. That take approximately 4-8 years including 3 years of work experience. There are several universities that have programs that start at the beginning of the college entry and proceed all the way to the PhD. It might help to trim the number of years to reach the PhD.
Step 2. A college student then has to go further in formal education than a Bachelor's degree (BA or BS). However, that choice is narrowed by how well one chose the major area. So, next one chooses a MA or MS degree in the same area as the major area. Another option would be to gain life experience while seeking the the MA or MS degree rather than gaining life exerience at step 1 at the BA or BS level,. That is an individual choice to be made. that will be 3-4 years in time to complete the MA or MS degree.
Step 3. The next and last step is the work toward the Phd level which is the basic requirement in education of the professor. That definitely will be in the area of the major in the BA or BA and the area of the MA or MS degree. However, that may be another choice academic choice if the choice of the specialty in the professorship has changed from what it was a the BA or BS level. then one is ready to go into the professor role. It could also take as much as 3-8 years with 3 years of work experience.with
There are still several cautions to be cited in the making of the professor. The total time is at a minimum is 10 years with work experience included. At the maximum, the time in number of years is 17 years with 3 years of work included.
I would be remiss if there were not discusssion about the cost of making a professor.
To achieve a BA or BS degree, the cost coul range $40,000-$200,000 which in dependent on the choice of the universities. State colleges would be the least expensive, state universities would be more expensive, and private universities would be the most expensive.
To achive a MA or MS degree it may cost $45,000-$75,000, again depending of whether higher education is offered at a state college. a state university or a private university.
At the doctoral level, the range of costs would also be based on where the candidate chose a state college. a state university, or a private university. However those total costs may be in the range of $150,000-$250,000. Good luck.
A professor is a type of senior teacher. Literally, professor is Latin for a "person who professes to be an expert in some art or science, teacher of high rank". However, in the United States and Canada the title of professor is given to a much larger group of senior teachers in two- and four-year colleges and universities.
A tenured professor has a lifetime appointment until retirement, except for dismissal with "due cause".
Non-tenure-track positions:
Individuals in these positions typically focus on teaching undergraduate courses, do not engage in research, do not engage in departmental decision-making, and are not eligible for tenure.
