Anne is planning a trip and needs a car. The car company charges $36 per day plus $0.50 per mile over 100 miles. Suppose Anne rents the car for 5 days and drives 180 miles.
Write an expression for how much it will cost to rent the car

"per day" means you multipy by the number of days
this is 36d in algebra
"plus" means "add" so you have

.50 "per" means you are multiplying 50 cents
"per mile over 100" means you are multiplying 50 cents by the number of miles over 100
This would look like .50(m - 100)
So the expression becomes
36d + .5(m - 100)
If you want to work this out for the given problem, you would do the following:
If she rents the car for 5 days and 180 miles, that would be
36(5) + .5(180 - 100)
= 36(5) + .5(80)
= 180 + 40
= $220 for the rental
