Is narcissism real?

I'm a 17 year old student thats recently been diagnosed by my schools 'trained' mental health professional as suffering from narcissistic personality disorder. My parents have taken this pretty bad, they're getting me a psychiatrist. Isnt that a waste of money? My arguement is that everyone appears to be arrogant when a debate is based on their speciality so is everyone is narcissistic?

  • There is a very real personality disorder called Narcissism.

Psychiatrists do not go into the field for money, unlike what others may think..

I have been in psychiatry for 27 years--not a doctor--but have seen alot.

Your school's 'trained' MH professional? Is this person a licensed psychologist? A psychiatrist?

Narcissism is a far cry from arrogance.

  • Listen, everyone is narcissistic / selfish to some extent, but nobody will admit it.

Even the psychiatrist that always says that narcissism is a disease is a bit narcissistic, doesn't he think only about money? Does he really care for your health? How many zombified people one can see that didn't need antipsychotic meds. There are many economic interests behind drugs prescriptions. Aren't the pharmaceutical companies self-centered and avid? Sure they are, but they won't admit it. They would say that you are sick to sell their drugs and make profits. THE MAIN RULE IS: If you don't have any depression or anxiety, you don't need any treatment.

    This is my opinion.

  • Unfortunately, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is very real. I am not sure what your school's "trained medical professional" is trained in.....but at your age, more than likely you just display narcissistic traits, which is very common in teens. NPD generally doesn't starting showing "true" symptoms until around the mid 20's.
