Diabetic Coma?

My mothers boyfriend just went into a diabetic coma this morning and even though they injected him, he has still not woken up. I'm very afraid and upset. Will he wake up?

  • You can go into a diabetic coma if you're blood sugars are extremely high (Type 1) or if they are too low.

I have been in the hospital numerous times over the past 20 years with very low blood sugars (in teens and lower) and have gone into a diabetic coma prior to arriving at the hospital and then staying in a coma up to 2 days before waking up. A diabetic coma really messes up your body including electrolytes.

In my opinion, it depends on the severity of the case as to when/if a patient wakes up. The good news is that your mother's boyfriend is where he needs to be to get the proper medical attention. I hope he wakes up soon.....

  • Many people like to talk about diabetic coma being caused by both low and high blood sugar. However, the instances of diabetic coma due to high blood sugar is very rare. Whereas, a coma due to low blood sugar is much more common.

In this case, the blood sugar dropped so far that the man loss consciousness and his brain basically shut down from lack of energy.

If a glucagon (you said they injected him so I am assuming this first) did not revive him, a glucose solution via IV in the emergency room will.

A person will suffer no ill effects from a hypoglycemic diabetic coma provided they are treated quickly.

  • Dont worry they put an IV in him and when it comes down low enough he should wake up i was pretty darn close to being in a coma when i had my first blood test...good luck
