Why did apple inc. stop using IBM processors after spending so much money on the "Mhz Myth" etc campaigns which all claimed that PowerPC chips were vastly supieror to "wintel" and AMD processors.
Because IBM basically got out of the comsumer market for chips and the dual core technologies developed by Intel far surpased anyhitng the the RISC basd amd Motorola based processors would ever have been capable of.
Also, from the business end, Apple can now take advantage of much cheaper processors as the volume of Intel chips makes for a much more inexpensive CPU. Ditto for memory and most other components as well.
This brought the Apple products much more in line with PC pricing.
Because IBM was too slow in upgrading the PowerPC chips and wouldn't provide Apple with enough processors to meet Apples sales demands.
At the time Apple was running the MHz Myth campaigns, PowerPC chips were superior to Intel and AMD, however IBM didn't upgrade them so in a few years Intel and AMD caught up and surpassed the PowerPC, so Apple switched to Intel.
The PPC chips ran in 128 hz cycles, and the PC chips ran at 64 hz cycles. A PPC chip could process larger chunks of information at a time, then a PC chip could. So even though it showed a slower clock speed, the PPC actually was processing more information, faster.
IBM couldn't come up with the chip designs they promised Apple, and Intel could. It's that simple.

They were superior, but have hit a brick wall for further development. PCs are far more future proof.
