Why do carb-heavy foods cause digestive problems?

I used to eat a very carb heavy diet without issues, I'd have healthy BM's 1-2 times per day.

I went very low-carb for a while about two years ago, and since then I've issues with carb-heavy foods.

My diet is normally not high carb (high protein, low fat, medium carbs - with carbs ideally from vegetables, fruit, or oatmeal. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have the odd chocolate!) but if money is tight I have to have cheap food like pasta, brown bread, brown rice, white potatoes, and sometimes frozen pizza, thus high-carb.

I always end-up with bowel issues - very gassy, bloated, and loose BM's - I can't clearly identify which foods may be causing the issues, and I don't want to jump on the gluten sensitivity bandwagon, but something about these foods is clearly causing issues. Could it just be my body struggling with high-carb foods in general?

  • There's no substance.

If you see a grey, loose scat in the woods, you know it was an obligate carnivore. Maybe a wolf or coyote that ate nothing but meat. A healthy human stool should come out pretty supple because it has very literal fibers from vegetables like asparagus where you can pull strings out of it if you wanted to. If you ate a big bowl of buttered noodles with Alfredo sauce, once the complex bee-hive structure of the carb breaks down, what you have in your stomach is a grainy sugar paste and the oils and fats in the sauces. Telling me that comes out less than dignified is not a surprise.

I'd hate to post-face with a simple "eat more fiber" but that's what it comes down to. What you've asked is on par with "why do I get dry when I don't drink water?" You're not supposed to live off cheap carbs alone. It hurts when you go like that, so don't go like that.

If you buy a $4 whole chicken, you can feed a family for a few days. I refuse to buy the idea that you're too poor to eat healthy. There are "health foods" you can't pronounce or afford, but most of what people call health food now is what we called food in the very recent past. It was in the 90s when Oprah empowered housewives to get jobs that kids came home alone and microwaved Hot pockets. Mom did too so she got fat and the Snackwells sold her diet cake. Now diet cake and frozen burritos are food while putting a dead animal in a pot like cavemen and crackheads do is "health food" only for the rich and powerful.

  • Don't listen to "Them." Your problem is probably that you eat too large servings. Spread your meals out.

Nothing is wrong with brown rice. Geesh.

  • Maybe your body got used to feeling better without the carbs. It sounds like you have a very bad diet in general.

  • What you call "high carb" are just sugar-foods. They have no nutrition and no fiber. So they get into your gut like a lead weight. When money is tight you eat CABBAGE - not pasta junk food. Cabbage keeps 1/2 the world alive.

If you want to science on JUNK food, get a copy of "Fat Chance" off of Amazon - and it will explain all this quite well. Refined carb garbage is real hard on your liver as well - somewhat like booze.
