how do i convert ppm to micromoles/gram?

i have a problem to do and it requires me to first convert a value of 478 ppm to micromoles/gram. how would i do this and what is the process?

  • divide 478 ppm by molar mass in g/mole

    **********

    ppm is parts per million

if that is ppm by mass.. and it is say ppm A in a mixture then...

    1 ppm A = 1 g A / 10^6 g mixture

    (1 g A / 10^6 g mixture) x (1 mole A / X g A) x (10^6 µm / mole) = µmole / g

    the 10^6/10^6 cancels and (1 mole / X g A) is 1/mw A

    so....

    ppm A / molar mass A = micromoles A / g mixture.

  • ppm = 1 part per 1x10^6 so 1x10^-6 grams per gram

    478x10^-6 g / gram

    478 micrograms / gram

divide 478 by the molar mass of the substance and your answer is micromoles/gram

Assume the substance was C6H12O6; molar mass = 180.2 g

    478 ppm of C6H12O6 = 478/180.2 micromoles per gram (2.65 micromole/g)

  • ppm is a usually unit for density. gram is a unit for mass. 1gram per million grams would be ppm. or 1milligram per 1 Kg makes 1 milligram per 1000000 milligram. In industrial practice they usually refer them differently (forgetting some parts). Hope it helps. p.s. maybe 1000ppm = 1gram ( / Kg ~ As Kg is SI unit so it need not be specified industrially)

  • well, ppm is concentration measure and represent mg/L

First time that I see this micromoles/gram ??? unit for what?? makes no sense because it would be different for different substance
