Nope, they are totally useless IRL. heck, they're even useless online. Well, you can get ridiculed if you stick around long enough to accumulate a lot of them.
Hover your cursor on ABOUT at the top of answers, then click Points & Levels. You will see charts that show you what you can do each day on each level. We get nothing for them except the feeling that maybe we helped someone. You can't sell, transfer or trade the points. When you close the account, the points, questions and answers stay with the Yahoo archives.
When you first join answers, they give us 100 points to get started
When you sign in each day you'll get 1 point
To ask a question is -5 points
If you choose a best answer to your question, you'll get 3 points back
Answer a question and you'll get 2 points
Vote on a answer is 1 point
If your answer is chosen as Best Answer, you'll get 10 points, plus 1 point for each thumbs up, (50 max)
Be sure to read the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service so you won't get any violations. Too many of those, or serious ones and Yahoo may suspend your account.
Best place to see this information is to click about at the top of the page and scroll down until you see the link of "Points and Levels." Basically the more points you have, the more questions you can ask and answer in a day.
Now that you mention it, they are kind of useless.
I think they were designed to encourage contribution to the Yahoo Answers community, as you need to answer to be able to ask. Therefor it keeps the site alive.
However they really should make asking questions cost more or answering questions worth less, at the moment the plan seems to have failed because 5 points (The amount it is to ask) is nothing.
Each night a fairy checks how many point you got that day. If you got enough (depends on the fairy and person), a present will be shipped to you from Uzbekistan. If you did not get enough... let's just say you won't be having a merry christmas.

You can't do anything with them. If you want to ask questions you need points to start with but once you have lots of points they become irrelevant.
And I was hoping to buy a Lamborghini with them.
You don't use them for anything, just for show
It helps you to upgrade your level, and extra points mean u can ask extra question !
Keep collecting those
Good luck and merry christmas ~(‾â¿‾~) ~(‾â¿‾)~ (~‾â¿‾)~
They sit there, smugly, taunting me.
