Divide this complex problem?

(y^3-y^2-14y-3) divided by (y+3)

  • Hi Kitty Cat. It's me again. I hope you don't mind me answering your questions.

    (y^3-y^2-14y-3) divided by (y+3)

    = (y^3 - y^2 - 14y - 3)/(y + 3)

The numerator cannot be factored. So all I can do is find the quotient and remainder.

    By long division

    .......... y^2.. - 4y..... - 2

    ......... ---------------------------

    y + 3 ) y^3.. - y^2 - 14y - 3

    .......... y^3 + 3y^2

    ......... -----------------------

    .................. -4y^2 - 14y

    .................. -4y^2 - 12y

    .................. --------------------

    .............................. -2y - 3

    .............................. -2y - 6

    .............................. ----------

    ...................................... 3

    (y^3 - y^2 - 14y - 3)/(y + 3)

    = y^2 - 4y - 2 + 3/(y + 3) .... 3 is the remainder
