I'm confuse if I am a Democrat or a Republican.?
I'm 14 year old girl from new york. My dad is a conservative republican, and very big on politics. Ever since I was little he used to rant out his anger from what was happening in politics on me. I saw as myself as brain washed, believe everything my dad said is right. I decided i didn't want to have this republican news shoved in my brain, so I tried to rethink my views. Its very hard to disagree with something you believed your whole life, so I believe in Democratic and Republican views. My dad still rants on me, and I disagree with him, and he is such good debater, or I just can't back up my views that well that when I lose, I think what i just believed is wrong. I than become completely confuse.
I guess what I'm asking is for some clarity, and I want to you to answer your democratic/liberal views on the following topics:
Gay Marriage
Health Care
Big Government
and/or socialism
Constitution (it being a living document and all that stuff)
Religion in Government
& any other topics you can think of. Its nice to hear opinions other than my dad's. Answer as much as you can. For people wondering if I'm going to automatically going to agree with the answers is wrong. I just need to hear both sides and pick for myself what I believe in. Also, remember I'm a freshman in high school, and if you give me this essay on it, I properly won't have the attention span. Thank You.
Update:Its not like I haven't heard this all before.
I want the side's opinion on the topic so I can make the choice myself. Listening to my dad doesn't help me. What if he is not right? I can't make sure unless I investigate myself, you guys are not helping me. So why even click the answer button if you don't plan to answer my question?

Just look at the other sides argument and make your decision from there.
Gay Marriage- Gays should have the right to marry. There is no reason to not let them marry. I do not agree on any constitutional amendment that would ban or give gays the right to marry, as that should be left up to the state.
Health Care- If possible the government should provide its citizens with health care. As many need it and without health care many will suffer.
Big Government- Government is there to serve and protect. This includes regulation so that people will not be treated unfairly. It does not have the right to tell us what to do in our everyday lives. Such as: what to eat, drink, wear, believe, or do( to a certain extent)
Socialism- Is not as bad as media would like to portray, it works for many countries. It can help provide for those who need help. Every developed country has some degree of socialism.
Constitution- a document that establishes a backbone for our country. It is a base that allows us to build a better society.
Religion in govt.- Religion should be completely separate from the government, unless it is some sort of case where the person was being discriminated against because of religious belief. The government should not prefer any religion over the other and should not be allowed to take away any religious rights.
Abortion- thought about including this since it is somewhat of a hot topic, even though it is been legal for over 30 years. I think the woman has a right to abort the fetus up until the 5 month period, because the baby is not yet viable. After that abortion is only an option for a woman with serious health issues, or if the child is expected to have severe mental retardation.
Read all the answers and go from there. Me choosing my political beliefs was really hearing different parts of the story. Don't limit yourself just to a democrat or republican. Look at history and see what you think worked the most. Don't completely drown your dad out, but don't look just to him for opinions you have to be open to all of the views and create your own belief from there.
Gay Marriage/Abortion - A religious view, nothing to do with political party affiliation.
Health Care - I don't think the gov't has the right to force Americans to pay for something when not all can afford it.
Big Gov't - Can be extremely harmful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_government
Constitution - A compromise of the people that limits gov't power
Religion and Gov't - Should not mix
I know you wanted Democrats to answer, but I thought your story was interesting because I grew up with a father like that (but my parents were divorced and lived long distances away). My father always said if you push to hard you will push your kids in the opposite direction..I agree with that statement 100%.
I grew up around grandparents who were Independents and now are Republican, and a very Liberal Democrat father. I was a Democrat for a few years and now am a Conservative Republican, but tend to stay close to the center.
Just remember if you register to vote and decide to register as an Independent, you can't vote in the primaries. But by listening to speeches before elections and deciding who you like the best from their speeches you might find out your political party that way!
Politicians are evil. Republicans and democrats are equally evil. The difference is that republicans normally dont take things as far as democrats. They dont tax as much, and impose so many restrictions on business. My business is being bankrupted by democratic regulations and taxes. It has all gone to China.
Gay marriage and abortion are side shows meant to distract us. So is religion in government. They only talk about them because people have strong opinions about those things, and the evil politicians want to divide the people. Politicians want money and power. They could care less about babies and gays.
Government does not care about you at all. They only do just enough to stay in power. History shows a hundred times over that governments start small and then get big and become violent and communistic. Almost never does a big government shrink. Governments eventually get so big that the people revolt, and the cycle starts again.
Do not trust the news. It is just an arm of government. Television was quite literally created by government propaganda agencies.
I wish you the very best.
If you can't hold up your arguments, chances are there's something wrong with them.
You can't be "brainwashed" without your consent. Just think for yourself. You can find the Democrat positions on those subjects through Google (Oh how I love thee) or the Democratic Platform. If you look for the answers here, you'll get a mishmash of personal views that aren't consistent with the actual Democratic position. Get the info from the source. http://www.democrats.org/a/party/platform.html
And you say you don't want any essay-length answers, but politics isn't something you can leave at a sentence. Do some reading and really know the issues. Otherwise your views will end up being superficially created and not stand up to any sort of questioning.
Uh yeah, the two Dems and Reps are hypocrites. you notice, they are no longer run by potential of ideology yet specific activity lobbies and via the years, as those lobbies have switched around, so have the events. decrease back interior the day while Lincoln grow to be a Republican, they supported blacks and now, they seem to hate blacks. The Democrats have a tendency to be socially liberal, yet then they do no longer help decriminalizing pot and gun rights. The Republicans are professional-existence so why do they help the dying penalty? Economically, the Democrats elect extra taxes and government spending to redistribute money from all human beings to the unions, legal specialists, government workers and the poorest. The Republicans elect extra government spending and borrowing to redistribute money from all human beings to China, companies, massive banks, and the richest. undemanding as that.
Gay marriage; I believe that government should not recognize marriage at all, we should all be viewed as individuals. Marriage should be decided on between the individuals getting married, and their church.
Health care; You have the right to whatever you can afford. You do not have the right to force others to pay for your needs, nor does the government have the right to force you to buy health insurance.
Big government; Intrudes on the freedom of the individual.
Constitution; Is the contract we have with our government. It limits the governments power and assures our freedom.
Religion; Has no place anywhere near government
Hope that helps! I consider myself a Libertarian, neither repub nor dem.
Grocery list for democrats and republicans.
Democrats: Gay marriage should be legal, and the government should have no right to say what happens in the bedroom between two consenting adults.
Republicss: Gay marriage is an atrocity against god, it should be illegal and gays should be punished for sodomy.
Democrats: No one should be counted out of proper health care.
Republicans: You should have to pay for health care, if you can't afford it, tough sh^t.
Democrats: Big government means healthier public, better schools, better health care for the public, better effective military, better services available to the public ie jobs, insurances, advocacy groups etc. Big government makes sure everyone has an equal and fair chance at a quality life.
Republicans: Big government means I have to pay more money and I can't run my business any way I want to, I can't give my employees 50 hour shifts with only two hours of sleep, I can't push my employees to practice my religion as a requirement to work in my business, I can't hire only white people because the big government says I have to hire at least one minority in my business.
Democrats: Religion has no place in a government that's made of multiple religions and kinds of people, our government if put in the hands of religious people, everything that isn't in accordance to that religion would be outlawed, people would be punished for the faith that they have in god because it doesn't follow government regulated guidelines.
Republicans: Jesus needs to be taught in schools, everyone who doesn't believe in jesus is going to hell, and they aren't really americans anyway, they don't deserve the rights that our one nation under god has made for us citizens.
Democrats: A woman should have the right to choose what she does with her body.
Republicans: Abortion is murder, and should be punished like murder.
Democrats: The constitution protects our people, secures our rights to live free and have a quality of life.
Republicans: the constitution's very flawed and outdated, should be changed to suit the time period, but we believe the right to bear arms should have no regulations added to it, that means if I want to buy an anti aircraft missile to protect my home, I should be allowed to do it. Freedom of speech, yeah well, you should be allowed to think what you think, but not allowed to say just anything. I'll sue you if you say something I disagree with.
Democrats: Our veterans fought bravely to protect our way of life, and they deserve the very best our government can provide for them, health care, medicaid, food stamps, social security, and pensions from the military. It should be made harder for soldiers to be dishonorably discharged after being injured on the job. Sad that military isn't run the same way businesses are ran in the united states.
Republicans: If they're not in the military anymore, they don't deserve to have pensions or social security, even if they got hurt, they were stupid enough to stand in the line of fire, they should have to pay for it, and work to pay their way just like everyone else here has to. I'm not paying for their insurance, or their housing, I worked hard for my money, I'll be damned if I'm letting some vegetable from the vietnam war take a single penny from my paycheck.
Democrats: It's not your fault that you were born blind, we can help you find work, here's some food stamps and ssi while you're waiting for our programs to find you a job.
Republicans: You wanna eat? Then you gotta work! I don't care if you're blind and in a wheelchair, I'm not paying to sustain a life that should have ended at birth.
Democrats: There should be a program that helps mexicans get their citizenship easier so they can start paying taxes, they're gonna sneak into the nation anyway, might as well help them since they live here anyway.
Republicans: We need the national guard standing guard at our borders with high powered military grade weapons protecting our nation from illegal aliens, they don't deserve to live in our nation if they don't speak english and are intending on stealing a job and moving back to mexico with our nation's money, kill them on sight!
Democrats: We should try to help nations that are starving by sending food and supplies. When they're strong enough to stand on their own two feet, they'll be our friends!
Republicans: We should try to help nations that are starving by taking over their government and killing everyone who disagrees with our politics.
Democrats: The war on Iraq was clearly something that was intended just to avenge daddy, to get more oil, bomb some brown people, and make a mockery of our nation.
Republicans: Have you forgot what happened on 9/11? Terrorist nations should all be nuked off the face of the planet! Iraq's no different from pakistan, saudi arabia, india, anywhere that has people who wear towels on their heads and don't eat beef or praise jesus should be bombed into the ground...
Quote "Bomb b
I just want to say maybe you are none. You don't have to confine yourself to one or another. There is more out there than just Democrats and Republicans.
gay marriage decreases the taxes that they will pay as a "couple" instead of being single.....health care will raise everyone's taxes to pay for those that decide to have 10 kids and live off the system....big government is when the government controls your life.....socialism is all of the above....religion and government.....well that is a tough one.....this country is founded on christian principles....you know "in God we trust"....One nation under God........without those principles there is no basis for the constitution to even be valid anymore.....
Keep listening to your father. He knows best.
What you hear from friends & at school is drivel, based on 'fairness' and FEEEEELINGS.
The real world is where your Dad is.
