  • Let "x" be the amount of gas you will need (in gallons) because that is the unknown variable. For every gallon you have you can travel 12 miles so if you have 2 gallons, you can travel 24 miles. 3 gallons will get you 36 and so on. If you multiply 12 by the unknown number of gallons and set it equal to the end number of miles, you can solve for "x".

    12x=236

    To solve for x, you divide both sides by 12.

    x=236/12

    x=19 2/3

  • All you need to do is divide teh total miles you go (236) by how many miles per gallon the truck get (12)

    236/12 =19 2/3

  • Just divide 12 into 236.

    You get 19.7 gallons (19.66666...).

    EDIT:

    I just want to add that the gas pump does not show fractions. It will read 19.66666...
