Ectopic Atrial Rhythm?

I had an EKG done this morning and was diagnosed with Ectopic Atrial Rhythm i'm totally lost and confused after hearing i needed an ablation procedure for this. Please help me by explaining this condition in plain english.

  • ectopic atrial rhythm means your atria are not beating in concert with the ventricles, typically, they are not beating at all, just sort of jiggling, it's called atrial fibrillation. This results in ineffective filling of the ventricles and inadequate circulation to the rest of the body. But there can be other irregularities in the atrial rhythms that can transfer to the ventricles causing all sorts of problems, then an ablation is essential to prevent ventricular involvement. Surely your doctor explained all this to you, but if you have further questions, feel free to ask.

  • A quite common atrial arrythmia with little relationship to A.Fib. Ablative procedures for this sound like a major overkill.
