Can I use my digital camera or ps vita as a webcam?

Can I use it with those face cam programs or skype?

  • Can this camera be used as a webcam?

The quick answer to this incredibly common question is "No".

The more detailed answer is this: yes, sometimes it is possible, but it just isn't a good solution!

You would need to have the right camera, cable, software and drivers.

Then you need to set it all up to work, which can be a big pain.

Even if you DO get it working, you are now causing wear and tear on what might be a fairly/very expensive camera.

Webcams start at about $20.oo. They do the job well, they are usually easy to set up, and they can STAY set up - you won't want to quickly grab your webcam on the way out the door, only so you have to start setting up all over again next time you want to use it.

Check out the websites of Logitech, Creative, and Microsoft.

    All make good webcams.

Check the features carefully if you want to have those fancy video effects, because not every cam supports them.

Figure out which models you like, then google for the best price.

If you are still determined to use your still camera, then read your manual - if it is possible, it would be a good selling point (even though it makes little sense), so the manual will tell you how to do it.

  • The Vita has Skype, which can be downloaded free from the PS Store. I haven't tested it out yet but I'm almost positive that it has video chat capability on the Vita. The only bad thing on the Vita with Skype is if you have a lot of friends, say about 250, Skype won't work.

  • PS Vita has Skype now, and yes you can use both the front AND rear cameras as a webcam to video chat on Skype, it works great and its free for Skype to Skype calls.

  • I'm not sure about that model. I do happen to know many digital cameras come standard with the digital webcam feature. Usually the case it comes with will tell you if it can do that or not. If not, you can always but a cheap digital camera for around $15-$20, But what you pay for is what you get.

  • get the free software called manycam

plug your camera in you computer and activate remote shooting

    activate live view

    set manycam to show desktop

    select custom proportions in manycam

make manycam record only your live view screen

keep the live view screen visible, and you should be able to use that screen as a webcam, you'll just need a separate mic

this is what i do with my 5d mkii, and it looks really nice, with the right lighting
