Get VHS video onto a PC?

Is there a device (preferably cheap) that you can put a VHS video tape into and plug it into your computer and save the video onto it?

  • VCR player that accepts VHS tapes: $???

    TV capture card: $50

Video cord: $10 (but you probably already have one somewhere)

    Sound conversion cord: $15

Putting 'home movies' of your ex-wife on the internet: Priceless

The capture card lets your computer accept any of the video inputs that a tv would accept.

You would also need some way to let your computer accept sound. You can get a cable that converts the red/white sounds cords into a plug that you can put into your computers microphone/line in hole.

Then you just put the tape into the VCR player and connect it all up to your computer instead of your TV and press play. When you buy a TV capture card it will come with some software you can use to record the VHS tape.

[Edit: The one Dave linked is good. It also has some plugs for sound, so you don't have to worry about getting sound conversion stuff.

If you get the one that Dave linked.. make sure that the VCR player uses this type of cable for Video-out http://img.tootoo.com/mytootoo/upload/50/502389/pr...

Not this type of cable: http://images.esellerpro.com/2272/I/199/02/AP01707... ]

  • Step 1: Pick up VHS

Step 2: Throw VHS tape with all your force at your computer

Step 3: Your VHS is in your computer, enjoy!

    :)

  • It's called a video capture card. I prefer those made by a brand called hauppauge.

Here's an entry level one that plugs in via usb, so there isn't anything to install inside your computer.
