How do MMOs destroy a persons life?

For some reason MMO games like World of Warcraft and Everquest are famous for destroying peoples lives and causing addiction. But out of every bad MMO story you hear, there is always a story of someone falling in love through an mmo. But why do we focus on the bad side of these games? I've heard over 180 million Americans play some kind of MMO from Wow to Online poker. So if everyone plays an MMO then all of those 180 million people can be addicted. If they truly are addicting, why don't every city have a video game addiction clinic up? Or why isn't there an addiction to people watching television? Why do people only focus on the bad sides of MMO games?

  • * Very high level caps. + it takes longer to level up with each level gained. = A LOT of time on the game.

    * The rewards and incentives to keep playing that the game gives you encourages you to keep playing and improving = more time.

    * New content is being released. More time spent.

    * Some games require you to pay to play. Some games are free-to-play, but sell items or services for the game for real money. Often these items are unbalanced and make the spenders a lot more powerful than non-spenders, putting pressure on people to spend a lot of money to be good.

    * It is usually easier to interact with people online than in real life. = Less time spent in real life.

Some people are genuinely addicted to the game, meaning that if they could not play anymore then they would have negative physical and or psychological effects. Some people can play in moderation, it's just that the MMO is so demanding when it comes to time and or money. But either way, [{spending a lot of time and money on a game while completely ignoring your real life is always bad.]} Unless you have your own personal servant and you don't need a job, you have to take care of your life outside of the game.

In my opinion, adults in America generally have a negative view on video games. Many of them think that only kids play video games, and if you are a gamer who is in your 20's, then you are immature, irresponsible, poor, etc. It's not always true. Look at the news, they seem to do all they can to make violent video games seem unsuitable for anybody. They twist the content of the game to make it seem like it supports murder, theft, rape, lying, and other malicious things in the real world. Just look at this video:

They think that children exposed to video games are like sponge-monkeys who will absorb and repeat all they they are exposed to. Well, I've played GTA 3 and other M-rated games since I was about 6, and I'm not a violent or malicious person.

  • The number of people that DON'T let MMO's destroy their lives far outnumber the ones that do. Just like many other things in life people need to be held accountable for their own actions. If a game destroys someones life then chances are they have other underlying issues other than addiction to MMO's. People focus on the bad in everything because bad news sells and gets attention. Have you ever watched the news and heard 6 million people drove to work today and didn't die in a wreck? NO. You hear about the 1 person that did.

  • Demographics. People that watch fox news dont play MMOs, they dont get MMOs and they want news tailored to their point of views.

Ive been playing off and on since shortly after its release. Frankly, im really bored of the game but lets look at my options. I cant afford to drive anywhere (to hang out with friends, go on vacation, etc) There is nothing on TV i want to watch, and to be honest. I think world of warcraft is healthier then watching TV. at least im on vent Chatting with real people while I do a function that requires cognitive function. Unlike sitting on the sofa with one hand down my pants while watching some crap about whos next american idol...

  • I don't know, why do people state opinions/statements on Yahoo! Answers and slap a question mark on the end?

  • While it can be true for some most video games are benficial in some way.
