Why do parents do this?
Why do parents name their kid with a long name and then never call you by your long name but a short name, like Samantha or Samuel into Sam. Like, if you never had the intention of calling them Samantha or Samuel, why not just name them Sam? My Mom shortened my sister's name from Annabelle to Anna, some old lady at our church asked my Mom, "How is Annabelle doing?" And my Mom looked at her like "Who tf is Annabelle?" So even my mom forgot my little sister's full name was Annabelle because since the day she was born, everyone has called her Anna.

A full name often works better during adulthood for professional reasons. Though Sam and Anna definitely sound good enough on a resume...just some nicknames sound very childish. Like Sammy and Annie.
Well I guess it's just to not make a risk idk. Like if I would have a daughter, I would like the name Eleonora but I would call her Ellie. But I wouldn't actually name her Ellie because she might not like such a short name. Whatever I know it's complicated. But yeah I understand you. I know somebody named Konstantina and she has been called Nadia her whole life (don't ask how nadia is a nickname konstantina lol)
It gives the child more options to go by when they are older and to have a more professional sounding name for when they are adults. I personally love longer names that have nickname options, I LOVE nicknames!!!
An example is that my mom wanted to just name my one sister Brea but my dad didn't like it since he said it sounded like Cheese. So they named her Breanne and my mom calls her Brea and so do my siblings and I but my dad calls her Breanne more often than Brea.
Also my mom wanted to name my other sister Mandy but my dad thought that sounded too immature for when she was an adult so they named her Amanda. We all call her Mandy but her friends all call her Amanda and she likes now that she is an adult that she has a longer more formal name to go by.
I wish my parents did give me a longer name. Its Cassie but not short for Cassandra.
Because children grow, change and become their own person. The nickname they had a child may not fit them as an adult so a full name allows a child to choose something different as an adult if they want. It gives them more freedom in how they want to be known.
I've honestly wondered the same thing! I guess it's like everyone has said... it gives them options when they grow up to go by their full-name rather than a nickname.
Anna is a full name. But Sam is not. It should be proper, a full Samuel or Samantha
So they have more options to chose from if they don't like their name. For annabelle, ann, anna, annie, belle, bella
It gives the person a choice in later life.
it lets that person have a unique poersonality i.e. Name when he / she faces competition in his/ her later life
