It all depends on School work, etc. The S4 will be fine for internet and facebook, etc. But I got a Macbook and it's awesome! Well, if you're no longer a full-time student then I'd say you could be fine with the s4 since the screen is pretty big and you can do pretty much everything you'll do in a computer except type documents comfortably and make power points etc. You CAN make documents and powerpoints on smartphones (I've done it on my S2 sometimes) but it's rather uncomfortable for typing long essays on a smaller screen with just the touch screen ya' know? It's your call, that's just my way of seeing it.
If WiFi is available, you can transfer the files without USB cable. There is an app named Web PC Suite in Google Play which can help you with it.Install in on your S4 and connect it with your Mac by scanning a QR code. Then you can send your pics from phone to laptop with no effort.
Just use bluetooth or make use of a memory card reader if u plan to move big files but remember to unmount your memory card and don't always use this method as over use can cause damage

Mac has some restrictions on being able to talk to Android devices. You'll need a 3rd party application like http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
- Just hook up your phone to your MacBook via USB
- Open the Android File Transfer application
- Navigate to the Photos (or Pictures - forget the exact name) folder on your Android phone
- Click and drag the files you want from your phone to your Mac
Easy as that
