Math word problem???????????????

Help Please!

1. Tamiah keeps track of her scores when she plays her favorite board game, The mean of her 6 best scores was 243 until today, When she beat her sixth best score with a score of 237. If the new mean of her six best scores is 246, by how many points has a sixth best score increased?

  • i would say 18, but don't hold me to that as i have not had to do math problems in 7 years. But how i worked it out was to take the mean of 243 and work it out backwards. There were 6 best scores with a mean of 243. So you would multiply 243 by 6 to get the added total of the 6 best scores, 1,458. Then you would work out the new mean of 246 backwards. When you multiply 246 by 6 you get 1,476 as the added total of the new best scores. You would then take 1,476 and subtract the old added total of 1,458. Which equals 18. thus the old 6th best score will have increased by 18 in order for her to achieve the new mean of 246. Hope that helps and i did not just confuse you more.
