Most people are susceptible to advertising in one way or another. I'll be the first to admit that I don't research every ingredient in the foods I eat.
I've heard some pretty good things about Stevia (not just from "advertising;" I was reading several health food books and both mentioned how wonderful Stevia was, etc. etc.), but you're right. It is highly processed and any benefits are negligible.

You can grow the plant, dry the leaves and crush them. That's the only way I'd consider using it.
People want to believe in "healthy" alternatives. Manufacturers and marketing companies treat the general public as idiots. And it works.
