Is my blood glucose normal, diabetic or pre-diabetic?

I have insulin resistance, untreated. I had a bg reading of 97 four hours after a very light meal. It was 137 one hour after a meal of about four pizza slices, then 114 three hours after that meal. I should add that I took a long walk in that time. Is this high or normal?

  • It's high normal. Non-diabetics don't usually exceed 140 mg/dL any point after eating. Blood sugar peaks around 30 minutes to 1 hour after a meal, so it's difficult to say whether you were higher than that. Certainly, at 1 hour you were right on the cusp. 114 mg/dL 3 hours after a meal is, again, high normal. Blood sugar returns to normal fasting levels (below 100 mg/dL) within 2-4 hours, but normally within 2 hours. Your 4-hour reading was normal, but in a person without insulin resistance at all, blood sugar would probably have been in the 80s or lower at that point.

So, nothing dangerous or that just screams "diabetic," but on the higher side of what's considered normal by most physicians.

You say it was a light meal, but was it a meal high in carbohydrates? If so, try cutting back on the carbs and check whether you spike as high.

  • youre fine. youre blood sugar's going to change throughout the day. And it's perfectally normal for a person's BG to do up after they eat, insulin resistance or not. If youre really concerned and begin to experience symptoms of high blood sugar, test it, and if its over 200- pretty much at any time (unless its shortly after you consume something loaded with sugar) i'd get it checked out if it dosnt return within a normal range (70-120 is usually the go-to idea of normal BG).

  • the 6.9 is a tad high your target level should be 6.5 .. this is close enough under fasting conditions to warrent a physical exam . you are doing the right thing . your doctor can give you a target level . diabeties and depression are the legacy the baby boomers left ,both are epidemics , both are stress related .,i have it bad . most of leg fish food . needle phobic insulin . please have a exam . and there is never to much testing . you may be marginal type 2 , the indicator may be there . make doc app asap best of luck to you . if you find a spare right leg letme know definate purchase . all the best

  • ok it seems like you are ok because in the morning before breakfast it should be 80 to 120 and 2 hours after meals it should be 160 or less and at bed time 100 to 140
