There is no direct route that would be safe in winter however you can take I70 west from Vail to the Glenwood Springs exit about 80 miles then in glenwood you want to look for Hwy 86 or 83 headed toward Carbondale that that road about 35 miles back to the east and you will come into Aspen. There is a back way there over the mountains but it is iffy as far as when it is open. You can check the roads on the CDOT website. Hope this helps.

Mountaincutie is talking about Independence Pass. Its closed now. So you will need to travel the route she originally suggested.
Independence is only open from May to the first of September.
