algebra 2 WORD PROBLEM#2.?
cleveland, ohio and birmingham,alabama are 738 miles apart by train. an express train leaves cleveland at the same time a freight train elaves birmingham. the express train travels 21 mph faster than the freight train. the two trains pass each other in six hours. find the rate of the freight train.
Comments
Let X = velocity of freight train
∴ X + 21 = velocity of express train
Let D(f)= distance travelled by freight train
Let D(e)= distance travelled by express train
Distance = velocity x time
D(f) = X x 6
D(e) = (X + 21) x 6
∵ D(f) + D(e) = 738
∴ (X x 6) + [(X + 21) x 6] = 738
∴ 6X + 6X + 126 = 738
∴ 12X = 612
∴ X = 51
The freight train travels at a rate of 51 mph.
