  • ...but this is ARITHMETIC !

    P (parentheses)

    E (exponents)

    MD (multiplication/division)

    AS (addition/subtraction)

    15 - 2(5 + 1) + 3^2 = 15 - 2(6) + 3^2 = 15 - 2(6) + 9 = 15 - 12 + 9 = 12

If you can't do these problems, go to your teacher form help...this is FUNDAMENTAL !

    id est

Operations that are at the same level...

    (multiplication/division) and (addition/subtraction)

are done from LEFT TO RIGHT !

addition DOES NOT come before subtraction !

    People should read their textbooks...

  • (P)arenthesis

PEMDAS should apply to every equation you ever solve so remember it. Basically you do exactly what it says in the that order.

    Ex. 5-8+2=?

Since addition is before subtraction in the word PEMDAS you add first.

    So you have... 5-10=?

    And finally... = 5

For the harder one you do the parenthesis first of course so...

    Ex.15-2(5+1)+3^2=?

    15-2(6)+3^2=?

    Now do exponents...

    15-2(6)+9=?

    Now multiply...

    15-12+9=?

    Now add...

    15-21=?

    Finally subtract...

    = -6

  • (5+1)=6

    15-2=13

    13x6=78

    78+3x3=9+2=11

    The answer is 11!

Yay, I did it but probably got it wrong. <3
