How do I become a better actress?

I'm in honors drama at my school so I know I'm okay but I want to be better. My teacher gives me really small roles for everything. I tried out for one of the leads for our honors play and we had to do a breakdown scene (a girl about to give up on life) and read and I didn't get the part. But later my teacher showed the girl that did get the part my breakdown scene and said hers needed to be more like mine. So I guess that means I need to work on saying lines? I also tried out for the school musical and got in the ensemble. I'm glad I got in because about 40 didn't who did try out but how do I get a bigger and better role next time?

  • School classes are rarely much good, I'm afraid.

At the moment you should concentrate on learning rather than performing - it's rather like expecting you to pass your driving test before taking many lessons.

It sounds like you have real potential, but aren't getting the right support and tuition.

You'd do far better to join a good local acting school or stage school where you can really learn all the mechanics of acting before you start learning how to put it all together for a play.

    Good luck!
