Is CCl4 a nonpolar or polar bond?

And can you explain the charges of each/why its polar or nonpolar bond?

Comments

  • The electronegativity of C is 2.5 and that of Cl is 3.0

Therefore inea C-Cl bond the difference in electronegativity is 0.5 - means it is polar.

In a molecule of CCl4 there are 4 C-Cl bonds which are directed towards the corners of a regular tetrahedron. So even if the individual bonds are polar the molecule as a whole is non-polar( the bond polarities cancel out due to the symmetry of the molecule)

  • the four bonds are non polar because the charge around the carbon atom is equally spread out in the four bonds
