  • Most of the time it is from induction, this is the type of distress though where something has to be done then and then like an emergency csection. Often the distress happens from mothers who get induced which high dosages of pitocin (the IV). Other times babies can get mildly distressed if the mother is stressed during labour and isn't breathing properly and panicking, other times it can be from a mother who is pushing on her back as when a mother pushes on her back it makes the opening of the pelvis smallest possible which then means that as coming through the babys head has to get pushed over your coccyx (your tailbone) which sometimes is impossible especially if your baby is in a posterior position which then forceps or vaccum is used unless the mother stops and changes position like all fours or squatting. Also sometimes mothers who are lying down their whole labour due to induction or an epidural there is a chance of distress.

Sometimes "signs" of distress like they poo in their waters is not a HUGE concern, sometimes the doctors or midwives will act like it is but rarely it is a severe case and the labour can continue without constant monitoring or any augmentation (also with augmentation, the pitocin i said before will put the baby into more distress so it kinda defeats the purpose if you think about it) In only about 4% of cases where the baby has mec in the waters is it a serious thing. Make sure if this happens that you do NOT want to be constantly monitored for the rest of the labour and maybe only a short while on the belly straps or a short intervals with the hand held doppler.

My best suggestion would be to have a really good support team who can reassure you, who can calm you, who you can be comfortable around, who can speak for you during labour about your wishes, who won't automatically agree with every procedure the doctor says and instead asks questions like the BRAN acronym which is.....

B-- What are the Benefits? (of this being done)

R-- What are the Risks? (of this being done)

A-- Are there Alternatives? (than this being done)

N-- Does it need to be done Now?

Also read up on birth and all the info you can get and also address and deal with any fears you may have surrounding it. Often women will become a little scared and afraid of the contractions and fight them (which makes them more painful) so it is good to try out some meditation before labour so you can maybe use that during labour to help calm you

  • The Sage is right. You can help prevent distress by not lying on your back in labor and not being induced. Also being totally relaxed will help prevent distress.

  • Some babies just get distressed hunny, there no point in worrying about it. Some babies just dont like been stuck in birth canal, some babies just panicks i suppose.
