How are umbilical stem cells extracted?

Credible sources would be wonderful.

  • After delivery of the baby, the cord is clamped and cut. Then a needle is inserted in one of the cord blood vessels, and the blood extracted. It is ten tested, cryopreservative added (to stop damage while frozen) and then stored at -70 degrees C.

They can separate the stem cells from the more mature cell using a flow cytometer cell sorter, but generally this is not done, it is usually analysed to work out the percentage of stem cells in the sample.
