How do I write a good resume?

I've never had a job before(which I know is not a good thing), but I'm in the process of looking for a job. How can I write a good resume that will (at the very least) get me an interview, given those circumstances?

  • Besides setting all margins to 1", the most important criteria for setting up a professional resume besides relevant text, is "scanability." Here are some helpful tips:

    1. Place just below your identification header [your hame, address, phone, email address] any Conditional Warning Statement such as "Confidential Resume,"Do Not Contact Current Employer," etc.

    2. Always fill-in an Objectives category [just below the Conditional Warning Statement] and make sure that he Objective will contribute to the profitability of your future employer;

    3. Select a mono-type font such as Helvetica, Arial, Courier or Times Roman; do not select any cursive handwriting styles which cannot scanned;

    4. Keep font sizes within a range of 10 to 12 pts.;

    5. Avoid styling text with a justified alignment, keep it flushed left;

    6. Instead of using tabs to set up blocked text entries, generate a table and use the column and row settings accordingly;

    7. Do not place an i.d. picture anywhere on the resume, this is a major taboo due to discrimination issues;

    8. Do not place any graphic text [saved as .gifs] onto the resume since it may be overlooked during the scanning phase;

    9. List at the very end of the resume your interests which should include travel experiences, language skills, social interactions such as golf, team sports, tennis, etc.

    In conclusion, the above helpful hints were designed to allow ease of scanning of your resume into PDF which can then be text captured for seach purposes by your potential employer. If the original resume was created in Word, WordPerfect or Mac Appleworks, it can be Saved As a PDF file which then can be saved as an email attachment. Otherwise, you can simply use a scanner and scan a hard copy of the resume and then save as a PDF file.

    Failure to conform the resume to appropriate fonts and styles as outlined above will result in rejection of the resume simply due to the inability of the scanning device to properly index relevant resume entries.

    Good luck!

  • Well, firstly, good luck. :-)

    There are two approaches that generally work.

    One of these, is to tailor a resume for a broad spectrum of jobs that interest you. This way, you can appeal positively to employers across the board, rather than rely on one specialized resume that may be perfect, yet be shown to the wrong guy.

    The other strategy, specialized resumes. See a job that's opening up, or you have future hopes for, and craft a resume that focuses on the skills and references that will apply best for that particular job.

    The employer wants to see positive things on your resume. Not only about you having skills, but that you have a good character, references that can say they respect your ethics, and a record of being prompt, courteous to others, a hard worker. Look to yourself. If you were reading a resume, what would you want to see?

    There are resume templates online, google may help you find plenty. If the format is what you're after, that's easily handled. Try to avoid any advice to lie on your resume. Be calm, take some time, and think about your skills and any traits or life experiences that could apply towards work. Babysitting jobs, summer camp counseling, things not everyone thinks to mention, but regardless do show positive things about you.

  • A good resume starts with an evaluation of yourself. What have you done and what can you do. If you have never had a Job before you probably do not want a resume. You need experience working. Greasy Macks and the apple farmer do not require a resume. My first regular job was cleaning horse stalls at the age of 11. I put on my resume that I did it and got very nice tips from the customers who had their horses in the stalls I cleaned.

  • There are some professional resume writing services available online who help you draft your resume according to your requirements. You can try one of those. I tried to create my resume while I was looking to change my employment field, and to tell you the truth, I couldn't make it proper. So i opted for professional service and they did a great job. Here is the link: www.resumeapple.com. They have some great articles on resume writing as well. Try looking into it and let us know how it goes.
