silverado issues?

I have a 99' silverado 5.3. Had a crazy sqeak going on..it was coming from the alternator. I have changed the belt, put new bearings in the alternator...it was rebuilt, and changed out the idler. The alternator doesn't make the noise anymore, but the belt is squeaking bad now..and it's almost a new belt....Any ideas what to do about this crazy belt squeak?

  • I had a problem with a squeak I couldn't locate, replaced water pump, alt reworked, new tensioner... Turned out to be just the belt. The belt had a piece of cord showing and was causing the squeak. Sounds dumb, but true.

    Good luck

  • Check the other systems on the engine, i.e. Power steering, water pump, etc. Could have bad bearings in those as well. Also, check your cooling fan bearings. I had a 2002 Duramax and had to replace the fan bearings. Other than that, make sure your belt isn't too tight or too lose and you should be OK.

  • the new belt may be too smooth which could be causing it to not get traction and squeal.
