Why do my eyes change color?

My eyes are dark brown and sometimes they change to a dark green and in the summer time they change to light green?

Why do they do this?

  • Two things influence it. One is the light. Eyes capture and reflect the light around you. I have seen this in my own children. One daughter has eyes that look more green when she wears green and more brown when she wears brown. Just like when your teeth look whiter because you are wearing darker lipstick. It is about contrasting and complimentary colors.

Another explanation is that the iris of the eye is the color it is because of pigments. The level of pigmentation is affected by light exposure, just like your skin. My pale skin does darken up after long exposure to sun...not much of a tan, really, but not my "florescent Polish white" like in the winter. So your eyes can change tone too. They may look more green or brown depending on the time of year.
