Mossberg 500 Tactical 12 ga. as home defense gun?

Has anyone purchased this gun or used it at all? I haven't ever been in the presence of a Mossberg, are they reliable and well built firearms? I am partially considering this gun as a home defense gun because of its intimidation factor with the looks and the sound of the pump action. My main concerns are for the quality of the gun and the fact that I am left handed. Does anyone know if this gun is available in left hand or if it can be easily converted? It's about as high in the price range as I'd like to go for something that will only see the range a few times a year and otherwise sit by my bedside.

  • Ive got one. its freakin awesome!!! IF you can't find it lefty, maybe you could look at at Chuck Daly lefty. The mossbergs a much better gun, but the C.D. i've seen in left handed.

  • Mossberg 500 Tactical 12 ga. or any 12 ga shotgun from a reputable manufacturer is an excellent choice for home defense. The fact that you are left handed means that you will using your left shoulder to brace the shotgun's recoil and your left hand to squeeze the trigger. You really need a shotgun designed for left handed people, that way the ejector port will not be on the same side as your face when you pull the trigger.

  • Great shotgun...I have the Mossberg 500 Special Purpose Mariner in a Bullpup stock...

  • They have been making this gun for what seems like forever. I own the 835 which is pretty much the same except it takes 3 1/2's. I love it!

You will need to 'break it in" as they can seem a little clunky at first, but after a couple hundred rounds they smooooooth right out.

Just a little advice; I know gun prices are skyrocketing but maybe you should look around? 459? Seems a little high, almost robbery. I paid 264.95 out the door for mine and I believe they run a couple bucks more for the 835. Of course that was 6 yrs ago.

  • I just bought one in my area for $325 for gun and filing the paper work. The safety is located on the top of the feeder making it both right and left handed user friendly. I actually think it would be easier to load for a left handed person though. It is a very reliable shotgun for it is used by the U.S. military and police departments, passing there standards. If you treat it right and maintain it, the gun should last lifetimes. Its a good bang for the buck. About conversion you can pretty much do anything to the gun you want if the money is there. Recommend shopping around online for the best deal for what you want. I sleep very comfy at night knowing its there.

  • It'll certainly be a good tool for the job.

However, that "tactical" look could conceivably have a prosecutor ready to rake you over the coals in some jurisdictions if you should ever have to use the gun in a defensive situation. They'd claim that you were looking for an excuse to blast somebody. And if you live near a big city, it's quite possible that they could find twelve ignorant people with no appreciation of good equipment to convict you. You may be better off getting the gun with more a traditional-looking stock and fore-end.

  • The mossberg 500 tac is by far one of the superior shotguns in home defense hands down. The only step up to this shotgun woulde be the mossberg 590 IMO the 590 has dual shell extractors wich means you will never jam "at least I have yet to" it is also used widely by the US military. FYI dont buy a remington since the were bought out most of the parts are made in Japan and quality has gone to pot dont get me wrong older remingtons best sporting firearms in the world but now junk.

  • I do not believe they offer a left handed model.....

Mossberg 500 shotguns are an excellent choice..... They are quite reliable, easy to use and are priced right.....

I would avoid that tactical model.... Keep it simple is my motto.... Consider one of these....

The Mossberg 500 8 shot 20 inch barrel 12 gauge...

    http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/N...

or an 18 inch barrel 12 guage catalog # 50411....

    http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/N...

Both of these in my area sell for $299 to $349.....

What I don't like about the tactical model your looking at is the fact your middle finger cant reach the slide release with that pistol grip.... Get the regular stock model.....

Read here for more clarity..... Especially # 6.... For safety and fast handling this is important...

  • Mossberg is a respected name in shotguns. I really like their entire tactical line. And a shotgun is ALWAYS a good choice for home defense.
