How do socialist societies progresss?

I've been told that since all people in a socialist society are always paid at a constant level and always paid, there is no incentive for them to over-achieve, or even achieve what they are supposed to do. If this is true, why do European socialist countries progress faster than others? (Sweden has one of the highest standards of living in the world, and so does France)

They don't progress. Mixed economies progress. Also, you may be surprised by the Economic Freedom Index.

they progress b/c their socialism is only partial, with progress coming from the markets that have free trade.
