Why do my parents disrespect me?

They always make nasty comments about the things I say (Like today, ideas). I've even stopped talking to them because of this, but occasionally I'll work up the nerve to. I don't disrespect them, I'm extremely responsible, I get great grades, I hardly ever go out, and I hardly ever ask for anything. Why do they do this?

  • Often I feel that way with my dad especially. The reason is that I'm exactly like him in some ways and radically different in others. We're both stubborn and outspoken, but he's pragmatic, practical, and all that good stuff, and I'm a hopeless romantic and poet, etc. I think what has helped me most when my dad squashes something I say is to realize that I am becoming an adult, and that it's okay to have a different opinion than my parents. If they disrespect something I say, the best thing to do is let it lie and know that I have my opinion. Just make sure you keep on being respectful...that's great, girl! I have a hard time w/ it too!

  • Some parents have a real problem with not realizing their children are adults. My mother does the same thing. I'm 26 but still to this day if i correct her for something (not being disrespectful, just trying to have an adult discussion) she will come back with "Remember who you are talking to young lady, I'm your mother". Yea, and I'm an adult, you give me the respect i deserve, and i will give you the respect you deserve.

If i were you, i would sit your parents down and have a discussion about it. No yelling or anyone running out of the room in anger (my mom has a habit of that), tell them your views and demand respect because you give them theirs. Don't stop talking to them, that doesn't solve anything.

  • Are you up for adoption Honey ? We'll take you, You sound Wonderful and very smart for a young lady. We can't always choose our parents but we can choose our friends, I have 3 Daughters that could learn from you in this matter too, they think they have it rough too, because we spoil them with love and extra kindness, But when they visit their friends home and their parents they come to us telling us how lucky they have it here compare to their friends parents, We have two Daughters that we have adopted in the past and they came from abusive homes kinda like your situation. Not all parents are the same sweety. your parents seem to need a strong dose of reality to grow up and be grateful for having a Daughter like you. I know I would be pending another star on my chest as a proud father for having you as my Daughter here... Good luck !!

  • If I were you I would talk to them about it. Sometimes in order for parents to listen you have to make them. My I ask what kind of things they say to you? They may just be so set in their ways of doing things that they don't want to hear anything, but what they like. Don't stop talking to them. That will just cause a bigger problem.

  • Parents are just that way. Maybe have a talk with them and ask them why they disrespect you

  • Because they loves you very much and want the best for you. They see how other teenagers act to there parent's...and wondering if you will become like them...So she hit the rod before the child spoil. And for your grades...congratulations keep it up. And don't forget parents knows best . GOOD LUCK

  • don't feel bad my parents do the same thing to me. but they have a reason to so i don't know parents are just that way.

  • maybe they are scared that you will do the same things that they did. its completly unfair, but i have known parents to be like this.

  • Because they are bastards, maybe you should try talking to them a bit, that might or might not help, it should if their sober.

  • Parents just dont understand.

    lol
