algebra word problem?

a man drove part of a 185mi trip at 50mi/h and the rest at 55mi/h. find the distance she traveled at 50mi/h if her total driving time was 3h and 30min.

please explain how you solved

  • x = hours at 50mph

    y = hours at 55mph

    x + y = 210/60

    50x + 55y = 185

    (the 210 came from 3h and 30mins in minute form, but since everything is in hours, you have to divide it by 60)

    Then solve.

    Answer:

    x = 1.5 hours

    y = 2 hours

  • Two hours at 55mph = 110 miles

    One hour at 50mph = 50 miles

    Which equals 160 miles.

    Half an hour at 50mph = 25 miles.

    160 + 25 = 185 miles.

    (therefore two hours at 55, and one and a half at 50)

  • 50 h1 + 55 h2 =185, h1 + h2 == 3 + 30/60

    h1 = 3/2,

    h2= 2

    50 x h1 = 75 mi

  • 3.5*50 = 175

    you need ten more miles or two more hours driving 5 miles an hour faster. There is an equation to figure this out but I just woke up

    Luckily maellstorm is awake
