84 camaro Distributor problem, help!?

I have a 1984 chevy camaro with a 2.8 v6. We replaced the distributor marking the position of the old distributer and put the new one in the lined up a the mark we made. When we went to start the car it wouldn't start or even fire. We tried movin the distributer one cog in each direction trying to start the engine and still couldn't. Then we set the crank at top dead center and the distributer at the #1 piston positio. When we tried to start the engine we had some backfiring but most notable was that when it did it sprayed gas out the carburator.

We tried rotating the distributor while cranking it 1/16th of an inch at a time 180degrees, also, and did that every time we pulled it out and reset it.

What else can we do?

  • BRING # 1 PISTON-UP TDC ON COMPRESSION STROKE AND CK YOUR DAMPER PULLEY TO SEE THAT THE LINE IS MARKED AT ZERO--OKAY-- THEN PUT YOUR DIST BACK IN SO THE ROTOR LINES UP WITH # 1 ON THE DIST CAP. RE-INSTALL PLUG, CAP AND RE CHECK ALL YOUR WIRES FOR PROPER PLACEMENT. MAKE SURE YOU PLUG-IN THE DIST AND WHEN STARTED SET YOUR TIMMING.

  • The crank and cam are 2:1 ratio. Make sure #1 cyl is at TDC. Pull the spark plug or check that both valves are closed on #1.

Make sure the replacement dist is correct. Also some earlier 80's cars had weird ignition wire placement on cap.

Oh one more thing the plugs should be soaked in gas by now, remove dry or replace.

Good luck you will get it running.

  • pull the valve cover, and watch the sequence of the valves on #1,

intake will open, then as the piston comes up to the top, set the timing mark to 0, put the dist in, and set he rotor to #1.

double and triple check the wiring, being sure they are correct, also, be sure you put the wires on as the engine rotates, ie, the plug wire order is counter clockwise versus clockwise/etc..

  • i could furnish the guy $500 for the automobile if it needs all that artwork, Plus if the tranny fluid smells burnt, The transmission will could be replaced quickly. those products: exauhst leak needs a clean gauge cluster new driving force door cope with it doesnt open from out area Are rather uncomplicated fixes.

  • Time to pull out the 'CHILTON' manual or see a mechanic. You've screwed it up
