Memory card reader/writer does not read/write 480mb/sec..........?

A lot of USB 2.0 devices "CLAIM" to have high read/write speeds, with up to 480mb/secs for USB 2.0 and 12mb/sec for USB 1.0. I have a few devices that seems to be capable of doing that, or so it shows on the manuals or packages. But in actual fact, they don't. It didn't bother me much but until recently, when i bought a few external hardrives and a memory card reader, it does. Obviously, the 2 products i bought are used for media storages, therefore i care about the transfer speed. The memory card reader/writer is a high speed USB 2.0 that can read up to 480mb/sec, but the highest i ever got was 4.5mb/sec. For my external hardrive, the highest was 20mb/sec. I "NEVER" believed that the speed can reach up to that high anyway, but why does it show that on most products that claim to have "HIGH SPEEDS"?? As for USB 1.0, how the hell can it reach 12mb/sec, the max is like 950kb/sec, it always remain below 1mb/sec...........so plz, someone explain or help me here.

Update:

i only have an usb mouse & keyboard connected, nothing else. No other storage devices, thumbdrives or w/e connected, just the memory card reader. I did not connect both the memory card reader and the external HDD at the same time, so overall i only have 3 usb device connected, even if it doesn't reach 480mb/sec, it should at least read up to 50mb/sec right? Well i only get 4.5mb/sec, and i'm sure mouse and keyboard don't take up that much bandwidth.

  • usb bus are shared so if you have stuff like usb keyboard and mouse or other thumbdrive they take some bandwidth.
