How do you break down a compound into simpler substances?

For example: HCOOH(aq) --> H+ (aq) + HCOO- (aq)

  • A general way of doing it would be to heat something. This would genrally decompose most substances if you provided enough heat.

    Other ways involve energy like using UV radiation on Br2 to form 2 bromine radicals. The example you gave is driven by enthalpy of hydration and to a much lesser extent entropy however the equillibrium is far to the left under normal conditions so it's probably not the best example you could give. Try the complete dissociation of HCl ---> H+ + Cl-.

    But if you find conditions where it is enthalpically/entropically favourable for compounds to decompose they will.
