I am so glad I'm not Muslim. If you're taking cough syrup for the purpose of reveling a cough, then do so; cough syrup is not a beverage. I can understand if it is an alcoholic drink, but medicine, come on.
I'm not Muslim, but if it troubles your conscience why not use a cough syrup that doesn't contain alcohol? The alcohol added to cough syrup doesn't help your cough, it just helps you sleep. You don't really need it.
Because it is not for enjoyment and does not intoxicate you (assuming that you are going to drink only a little) then I say it is halal. But I am no imaam so maybe you should ask someone with more knowledge on Islam?

If you're concerned, there are pills that contain all the same active ingredients as cough syrup without the alcohol.

I'm pretty sure that if something contains alcohol and isn't used for pleasure and enjoyment, and doesn't get you intoxicated then it is permitted.
If it has alcohol in it then yes it is haram
