Neither are needed. Both Florida and New York are part of the United States of America. I would though suggest some sort of ID he could carry in a wallet or around the neck. Also if both of you are from out of the country, some hotels may require a passport.
How long have you lived in this country? He does not need a passport nor a birth certificate. You don't need those things when you live here, and travel within the States.

New York is part of America! No one needs a passport or anything!
No one needs a passport, both Are in the us:)
Where security is concerned, you need neither for 5-year-old children. (Just a valid boarding pass.)
